:: the 5th Doctor - Tom Baker ::

i seriously need to start watching Doctor Who. i’ve missed so much of it and the new season is soon to begin. i remember when the series came back i thought Christopher Eccleston was an awesome choice for the new Doctor and then when he decided to leave i didn’t think David Tennant could fill his shoes. i was wrong and then some. was he as good as Tom Baker? i dunno… i’ll always favour Baker because he’s the Doctor i grew up with… plus he had that really awesome scarf. when i think of the Doctor i always think of him.

soon the new season of Doctor Who will be upon us but not with the familiar Doctor that has won new fans. unfortunately, Tennant is leaving so in comes newcomer Matt Smith who will actually also be the youngest actor to play the Doctor in it’s series’ history. he’s a fairly unknown actor but you know what? i think he’ll do just fine.

yup, definitely cheesy goodness. cue music!

as always i pretty much have the run-of-the-mill when it comes to the Laurier Co-Curricular Record ads in general. in the beginning i would try to make it academic but after a while it became boring and you could only do so much. i think it was the actual home banner for the Co-Curricular Record that changed everything. the staff in charge didn’t want something boring or stuffy but more eye catching. after those magical words i basically took the ball and ran.

i guess when it comes to the Laurier CCR ads i always try to go for the “what the…?” or something weird factor. does it make sense? not always. does it catch your eye? i sure hope so. will people remember? yes… please? lol.

this game, Robot Unicorn Attack, could be… nay, is THE greatest game in the world. simple in its gameplay, unique in its theme, pure AWESOMENESS in its execution. when you play this game it’ll bring back a piece of your childhood that you thought was lost.

this game won’t let you see dead people, hear sounds that only dogs can hear or put hair on your chest but it will do is bring you back the magical movies of The Last Unicorn, Neverending Story and Legend… pre-Tom “Captain Psycho’ Cruise.

once you hear the music of Erasure playing from your speakers no longer will you be crying in the corner of your shower about work or rage about the drama of Jersey Shore. when the music begins and the unicorn runs you’re fall back to your teenage acne days wondering of what could be… that and, of course, rainbows. yeah.

i had the two main ads already planned out and created… and then i decided to scrap them. both ads were going to use the same ‘tapestry banner’ but different graphics and for some reason i decided to just change it up last minute. well, no that’s not entirely true. i knew why i did it. since i was using the tapestry signage i wanted the ads to flow more instead of look entirely different but similar. plus i like the ‘apple man’ image… the flailing legs needed to be seen instead of being cut off.

the ad for WLUSU was scrapped. CCR and WLUSU changed places and, bing bang boom, this was born. since Laurier CCR is a familiar ad and didn’t have much copy having the legs block some of the text was ok. you could still make out the ad even with the blockage. if it was the WLUSU ad it’d be slightly more difficult. guess why the apple isn’t centred either… yup, you’re right.

i was going through some stock illustrations and i just happened to see this one with the bear and bird and thought to myself “what the…?”. my next thought was that it’d be perfect for a Laurier CCR. i like the fact that with their ads i have free rein to be as out there as possible (within reason, of course) so long as it has the proper copy. a bear drinking with a straw AND a bird that just staring at you - it’s eye just follows you wherever you go, man. definitely ad material.

i like how the eye quickly centers on the Women’s Centre ad. i’m always worried about their ads. they always want me to stay away from making it too girly and pinkish. well, i kind of delivered on one concern. heh. it’s pink but it’s also powerful.

btw, i’m happier with this incarnation of the Leadership Ambassador ad. woopah!

ugh. had designer’s block for the Leadership Ambassador ad. it was suppose to come out whimsical but came out kind of… menh. i mean it’s not bad but is not great. unfortunately, i didn’t have enough time to go through more images to find something else. i do like the image but it might not be suited for this particular ad. maybe next time.

i’m not happy with the Laurier Co-op ad. there’s way too much text but i didn’t just want to leave it plain. since it was for arts & science students i had to use robots. nothing says arts & science than a freaking ROBOT… right?!? right? ok. i need more sleep.

i still don’t like the Body-Esteem Group graphic they gave me. hmmm…

apparently i forgot to save the Leadership Award ad the last time so instead of simple text changes i had to recreate it. well, since i was going to have to redo it anyway from the ground up again i thought i might as well do a different design but with similar features. hell, even the lens flare is spot on… i think. do you know how hard it is to pinpoint a lens flare in photoshop? you think they’d put a zoom feature in that bloody filter but nooooo. thankfully, i don’t use flare too often. i outgrew that phase.
